Anti-Americanism has many different definitions depending on who is describing it. In this book Markovits explains the difference of what America does and what America is for anti-Americanism. The “does” is explained as our foreign policies while the “is” is explained as our way of life, people and products. In his first chapter Markovits forwards the Stanford professor, Joseph Joffe, by agreeing that anti-Americanism is not how Europeans feels about our politics. They explain how the real anti-Americanism includes, stereotypization, denigration, omnipotence, conspiracy, and obsession. These are all because of prejudices of Americans. Markovits compares and contrasts the prejudices of anti-Americanism to anti-Semitism. One of the main two differences are that anti-Semitism, other anti-isms for minority groups, the people that are being condemned are weaker than the main force, while Americans are a major force. The other main difference is that anti-Americanism is not because of an ascribed trait but because of beliefs, ideology, and our attitude. The French, including other Europeans, believe that Americans are phony, superficial, stupid and simple minded. They also believe that our democracy is not an actual democracy because we have the death penalty while most European countries do not have it even for treason. Along with this belief they think that we do everything too much or too little. Examples of this would too obsessed with history but not having enough history, and too dominated by women but too controlling of women. There are many other reasons why Europeans hate Americans that include: soccer, media, higher educations, crime, judicial system, and much more. Although most or all of these factors of anti-Americanism are European thoughts but do include France, one of the real questions is why do the French especially hate us? We have never fought a war against them, we have helped each other in our own wars and well as been trading partners. Americans and Europeans alike wonder this question and try to answer it for themselves.
